Why has this not been covered?! Cummins will start selling crate diesel engines (well, one to start) that is supposed to be 50 state legal!

Kinja'd!!!

https://cumminsengines.com/repower

160 hp and 267 lbs-ft aren’t earth shaking but they would be enough to move the cruiser around without too much trouble, crank the boost up to 180/280 and I’m ahead of my gas engine at my elevation with at least 2x the range. (not to mention about 300 lbs of engine weight dropped) Drool. Comes with everything needed for drop in.

Details are still being worked out as to what vehicles and vintages you can repower with this engine but I’m hoping it goes back 25 years...because that is coming right up.

There is a place in Florida that has been swapping these for a while now. It’s nice to see Cummins making it more accessible.

the 50 state certificate will be worth whatever premium they are charging for many people. myself included.

That would be an interesting swap for Crusty. I don’t think $10,000+ is in the cards for him though.

Of all engines they make, why the old-ass VM Motori turd commonly found in euro market Jeeps and Chrysler Voyagers from the early to mid 2000s.

I feel that an Erod would be a better swap than this for something that size.

why not Yamaha marine V8?

350HP. sure it’ll need a bit of work to make it work, but you’ll have something unusual to show people?

This is not a VM Motori engine. The ISF2.8 engine was designed by Cummins in India.

If you are gonna go for a marine V8, you need to find an Evinrude 2-Stroke V8.

Don’t confuse this with a 4BT, which is probably what you’re thinking of. This 2.8l option is much lighter and more refined for starters.

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > nermal
11/07/2016 at 21:07

Kinja'd!!!0

I’m not. The 4BT was super simple. I’m saying the LS would be much simpler, and can still be fixed by a novice.

You ain’t gonna be shredding much with 16o hp and 260 torques. Spend $9k less and put an SBC350 in it making twice the power and more torque.

Kinja'd!!! nermal > HammerheadFistpunch
11/07/2016 at 21:12

Kinja'd!!!0

This would be amazing in a Liberty with a mild lift and front / rear axle swaps. Find a southern one with no rust and a borked engine or transmission, get some junkyard axles from a HD pickup, and go to town.

Kinja'd!!! nermal > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies

Kinja'd!!!0

LS meaning GM V8? Yes, you are correct that one of those would probably be simpler, assuming you’re starting with a gas-powered vehicle that a V8 will fit in. Looks like cost is ~$10k for the kit with an LS3.

Cost of this engine will be a factor. It should take up less space than a V8. It also give the usual diesel vs gas advantages.

Kinja'd!!! Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies > nermal
11/07/2016 at 21:32

Kinja'd!!!0

I seriously doubt an LS(yes, the small block) takes up as much space as a turbo diesel, DOHC 4 cylinder. Accounting for all the things that go along with a turbo, it probably has 100+ lbs in weight over one as well.

Why not this? I dont know why this isn’t put in more things. must be cheaper than a cummins and dont know about the MPGs.

4.3L V6 aluminum block and heads.

285 horsepower (212 kW) and 305 lb.-ft. of torque on gas and 297 330 on E85

you can if that same engine or version of it was an option in the same year or newer model year of that same vehicle. This is true for the cars we drive on the highway. For commercial equipment this motor would work I think.

huge fan of this engine, but if Im going GM, its going to be a 5.3. I wonder if FJ80waitingforacummins every got around to finishing putting his 5.3 in his 80 series.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > Frank Grimes
11/07/2016 at 22:51

possibly. I can tell you that people going to the 5.3 gain about 2 mpg, which would be nice, with the 4.3 I bet even more.

The Cummins exhibition booth at OvEx East had a swapped TJ with one of these, but they weren’t advertising it too hard. It fit nice and snug in the Wrangler bay, so an 80 would have no problems. It smelled.

This engine in some form is being used here.

http://www.fotonmotors.com.au/foton/nv_power.asp?id=4&name=Tunland%20Single%20Cab%20With%20Tray

Relatively new to the Oz market, let’s see how they go. Maybe I should go test drive one and report back?

Non DI would be a big draw card for me.

Seems like the engine is not a bad unit.

are you sure its indirect? I think for it to be common rail it needs to be, but I haven’t really looked into it. its no 1hd but its a legal way to get some much needed range and economy. if i could get 12 l/100k combined that would sure be sweet.

Kinja'd!!! Rufant > HammerheadFistpunch

Kinja'd!!!0

No, I don’t know much about diesels. However it looks like some sort of electronic control of a more traditional mechanical system, sort of like what we had before everything went super high pressure and injectors that are service items at $$$/set.

I would trade slightly less amazinmg firgures of the latest DI set ups, for something a little more tolerant to fuel quality, moisture and something like the longevity of the old skool diesels.

“... not to mention about 300 lbs of engine weight dropped .”

Not to rain on your dreams ( I’m going to anyway, lol ), but that 503lb spec at the Cummins link is just the motor, right?

I consistently read that a 1FZ longblock is ~580lbs so the Cummins would be lighter, but I doubt 300lbs lighter by the time it was installed and you were done fettling all the cooling, electrical, HVAC systems.

While we’re dreaming the venerable 4.7L obviously springs to mind, but honestly the current 4.6L 1UR-FE backed up by the 5-speed A750F would be cool.

310 hp and 327 lb·ft with CARB ULEV II certification.

Also saw on an Aussie site the ‘Service Weight’ ( guessing that’s dealer-speak for longblock ) is 216.1kg/476lbs.

Would be cool, indeed...

Dreams are but a glimpse of the total possibilities, even when they never come true.

But I still think the 4.6L would be better... :)
